5 Jun 2009 Everyone, My painting, "Study of Paula" will be on display at the Art League until July 6th. (oil on canvas, 12" X 16"). This work was painted with a technique called "alla prima," which is Italian for "all at once." It means that you paint the whole thing in a single sitting, and each mark on the canvas plays a role in the final painting. (By way of contrast, take a look at the still life that is hung below this painting: worked in multiple painting sessions, the evidence of the artist's hand has largely disappeared.) Some of the finest examples of the alla prima technique can be seen in the works of Mary Cassatt and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. This small nude study was painted before a live model and a group of artists at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Georgetown. The lighting there is often weird, both on the model, and where you put your easel. But, sometimes, the results are good. --Tim |
