8 Aug 06 Frau Schirmer did not come to the 2006 reunion dinner as planned. We were all disappointed, and because I had more time in BERLIN that anyone else, I called her and asked if I could come by. She invited me for coffee on Tuesday afternoon. We only had an hour to talk, as I had to get to the airport for my flight to Bonn, but I had the impression that she was delighted that we had thought of her. The extreme heat during the reunion was hard on her (heart problems), and she apologized for not coming. She is straight-backed and taller than I expected, slender, and sharp as a tack. She remembers names and asked about several of you, and would be happy to hear from you. Her address is:
Frau Dr. Erika Schirmer Mozartstr. 29b D- 12247 BERLIN Germany We talked about old times and new times, German politics, U.S. politics, and exchanged a bit of personal info. She reported that her husband had died 4 years ago of a chronic kidney ailment, and that her sister (87) and her brother-in-law (90) live in California! She is alone in BERLIN, no children. All in all it was a pretty emotional visit for me, for all of the above reasons! I will try to keep in touch with her via postcard and phone! It was wonderful in BERLIN. Seeing and recalling names, faces and deeds is a lot of fun! Looking forward to seeing the Class of '67 in D.C. in 2007! Laura (Newby) Siklossy '67 |
