I was at TAR in (um) 1954 through 1956, when I was 10 through 12. In 1955, there was a Little League baseball team called the Mohawks--the only team in Berlin. We used to play against other teams from Down d' Zone. The next year there was an actual league. We had the Bulls, Bears, Colts and Rams. Here at the Brats website, I see the names of a lot of the kids I played with and against. Ed Maness, Meredith French, David Goldstein, Jim Becker, Terry Reese all leap out at me. Dee Shank and I had a lemonade stand. I also see the names of many girls I remember, notably Lois George, Margaraet Fleming, Barbara Prewitt, Trudy Galloway, and Sharon Culkin. I just stumbled upon this site accidentally when I googled "Berlin American High School" because I was curious about what became of the school after the U.S. military pulled out of Berlin. I attended BAHS freshman through junior year ('84-'87), but unfortunately I had to move back to the states before senior year, so I wasn't able to graduate there and enjoy the senior experience. So it was kind of cool to be able to browse through the Class of '88 yearbook and see some of what I missed out on. I have a few fond memories of my time at BAHS, mostly from junior year, including some of the parties at Setha Thavisri's house, Tim Brandt cracking me up (always wondered what became of that guy), and somehow acquiring the nickname "Fresh". I kind of doubt that many people would remember me since I was always the shy, quiet type who didn't stand out in a crowd. The competition we had at the 1962 German American Volksfest Twist Contest, with Phil Lear and his date, and me and my German girlfriend. What a fantastic time we all had! Sad times also, like getting detained on the duty train for several hours by the Russians, when they found out about an East German stowaway on board. When word came down from US Command to turn him over to the Russian soldiers, he was immediately executed outside on the tracks with a burst of machine gun fire for his "crime"! On a happier note, summer brought fantastic bikini clad German girls at the Wansee Beach. Then there was the thrill of meeting and shaking the hand of JFK on 26 June 1963 on his historic visit to Berlin! .......And who could forget the Raci Bar, Smoakies on the Kudam, and the Wall at Check Point Charlie! Ed Wong, you stole one of my girlfriends, remember! Her name was Ushi! The old gang, Gary Wittimyer andd Wayne Taylor, when every day was a party! BTW: No one ever found out who rolled the ten pin bowling ball across the line at Checkpoint Charlie with a lit fuse stuck in the finger hole. I think it is safe to say now that you should have seen the look on the Vopos's faces as they saw this flaming ball rolling in their direction, as they dove head first over the barbed wire, machine guns and all! We lived in the middle of History and I am proud to be associated with all the alumni from BAHS. I was in an unique situation, my mother was a tour guide for the Air Force, so I saw a lot of Berlin. My father was in the Air Force, but I'm not sure I can say what he was stationed there for, because I don't know. All that was left of Officer housing were holes in the ground where the basements used to be. The housing was off of Clayallee; Luchsweg, Biebersteig, Fischottersteig, and Wildentensteig strs. Kim Simpson, the Cooks, and the Beamans will know the area. The Gummi store in front of the Grunewald has grown a bit and they make a mean Venison stew these days.
