Lost friend lacked coverage
We lost a friend last weekend. Julie Muehlhan died on Aug. 28. She wasn’t a best friend, or even a particularly close one, but a good friend, and a kind and gentle soul, and we are so saddened she is gone. We will miss her so very much.
She had an amazing life. Daughter of a diplomat and raised across Europe, she partied with rock stars, lost a home in the horrific Hayman fire, and had been shot in the head by an abusive husband, which left her with impaired vision and in constant pain.
She lived through incredible highs and intolerable lows. And yet she never complained — at least not on her own behalf. Her only complaints were always on behalf of others. A liberal to the core, she was concerned about people losing their jobs and homes, the lack of health coverage (never mentioning she had none), always worrying that we, as individuals were not doing enough to help our brethren.
I assume she received disability. She waited too long to follow up on her own health concerns. People without insurance often do. The cancer she worried lurked turned out not to be the thing that she needed to be worried about, and in finding her answer, unfortunately, it was too late. They discovered fluid around her heart and there just wasn’t time to save our Julie.
We know an incredible person died without reason, and though she was an unimportant person to many, her passing should be noted. She made a difference, and we want people to take note that she is gone.

Comments: OMG – I accidently came across this website. I have been wondering for years how to find information about BHS and the “where are they now” regarding my friends with whom I have lost touch with many, many years ago. My sister, Laura (81), and I are always talking about the “good ole days” of Berlin. We remember all the things we did with our friends like going to the movies and then eating at the restaurant across the street (Fradeovilos – spelling?) – drinking Sambucca, having to cut through the bombed-out cemetery to get to school, going to the Fair that was held annually at the American Housing place – name escapes me, eating at the Imbiss Stand, riding the U-Bahn and shopping and eating on K-dam Strasse, going to the Wandsee, and riding the Duty Train…and many, many, many more memories.
With the exception of my sons, the best time of my life was my time in Berlin. I went to BHS for 7th grade, and then I went to JFK for 8th and 9th grade, and back to BHS for 10th grade. Laura did the same except she was one grade behind me. My brother Bill (Duff 82) was a grade behind Laura. My baby brother, Stephen, was too young to go to school.
I’ve always wondered what ever happened to Donna Mittelsteadt, Stephannie Hale, Julie Goff, Petra Dahlia, Mike Williamson, and so many more. I rode horses at the British Pony Club with Beccy Lewkowicz (sp?), Julie Muehlhan, and so many others whose names escape me at the moment.
We lived at 28 Gary Strasse, across the street from the Frei University. I was on the Track and Cross Country Team. Comments: Was finally getting time to browse around here. Once again, KUDOS to Cate Speer and everyone who helped on this web site. It is fabulous -- especially the detail work on the yearbooks. So helpful! (Especially for us "older" alumns.) Just wanted to make mention of a few responses that I saw here. These are people I remember: Kay Natzke , Chris Stern, Kurt Fulte, Pat Serna, Steve Sullivan, Bob Widger, Pat Garlewsky, Kirk McCord, Carter Embre, Norma Hughes...so many! To "Anonymous Jones" -- yes, we remember the AYA, the Grunewald, the Outpost Theater, the Duty Train and other "bonding" moments. I hope I can do this again and make it a regular stomping ground. I realized after going through all these posts that i have missed two years of contacting my BBers! Even if we can't make reunions, we can say "hey" once in a while. Comments: I attended BAHS for 7th and 8th grades and played AYA football. We left Berlin for a breif vist back to the states in 72 and we never returned. I never got a chance to tell any of my friends goodbye. I lived on Flannagan Strasse and had two brothers, Tim (72) and Andy (76) and a sister Jennifer (82). Tim played guitar in a band called Pacific Stone at AYA and school dances. It's great to see the year books and the faces of old friends that I haven't seen in 29 to 30 years. What a great site and great memories.

Comments: You fuckers, I still remember when Rich came into the class, and I still remember that Herbie was major upperclassman. Richard and I were 6th-going to 7th, to the new HS! Rich was not around that day, I felt comfortable and approached you, Herbie, asked about my bro, and you answered me, in front of your friends. That was a big deal for me. Do you remember ELSTRAN? Fucker was my 7th grade sci-teach, 66. Came back to play soccer in 71, with Wurzburg.Fucker busted me and two friends, riding bikes and skipping school,by the river. When me and the team were at BHS in the cafeteria, memories and the anxiety of seeing my friend again took over,"You look like someone I used to know,"Rich said after the scope.I was so happy, as I had told all my friends about BERLIN, and told them I wondered about my old friend, Richard. And to see you again, Bragging about the past, in the cafeteria, in 1971!Richard, you made my day. Herbie, you honored a lower classman, the day you didn't blow me off in front of you friends. Youse guys, I'm tutoring at Sulross. State U. for the UPWARD BOUND program. One weekend a month, besides my weekly gigs, with them. I miss youse guys and want to relate some stories.

Comments: I attended BAHS from 1980 to 1982. I graduated from the JFK School in 1983. I ended up at BAHS because I flunked Math and my science elective at the German school in 9th grade. My two years at BAHS were the best. I rediscovered the joy of learning and school. I deeply regretted not being able to graduate from BAHS. My parents had to pay tuition for me, though, and could not afford to pay for my senior year. I was somewhat shy, in part due to English being my second language and part because I was not used to school involving so many more social activities than German schools did. I know I missed out on a lot of opportunities but still had the best time at Bahs. I was and am a bookworm and could almost always be seen with my nose in a book. <g>
I have lived in Berlin for all my life except for 15 months in 1999/2000 when my husband had a scholarship to seminary in St Paul, MN.
My husband chris and I were married in 1992 and have been living happily ever after. We have no children or pets.

Comments: Aloha Everyone from Hawaii and Happy New Year! I just wanted to say thanks to all of the friends who have taken the time to find me to say hello. Its been really great catching up with all of you and hearing about your lives and children. I too have a 6 year old girl, named Arianna Michelle Kamalani O' Kamakaiwa Wilkins...yes..its a long name....well, she's Hawaiian like me, so we all have long names. Her Hawaiian name was given to her by my middle sister Makalena, most of you know who that is, Class of 85 BAHS. I really miss Berlin and hope to visit there one day with my husband Mark. I tell him all the time about the great memories of Berlin and Sauchsenhausen! What an amazing place that was! Anyone coming to Hawaii or would like to? Let me know..I can hook you up. There has already been one class mate to come...Rob....remember him..he ran with me at school. Its a beautiful place to visit, but expensive to live!
